Easy Icing Recipes For All Your Cake Decorating Needs

Do you need easy icing recipes? I've got you covered. With these recipes, you can frost your cake, make flowers and even do some cartooning. Its so much fun when you can present a cake that you made yourself. Here are the recipes I use all the time.

Decorators Frosting

I use this recipe to frost my cakes. Good for piping borders, writing, leaves, etc.

  • 2 lb. bag powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups crisco shortening
  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 tsp. white vanilla or other clear flavoring
  • 3 1/2 - 4 tbls. water

    Beat well for at least 4 minutes.

    Buttercream Frosting

    I use this recipe for flowers only. Very stiff.

    • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/4 cup crisco shortening
    • 1 egg white
    • 1 tsp. white vanilla or clear flavoring

      Mix by hand. Do not use a mixer.

      Cartooning Frosting

      This is very thin. Pipe an outline of your pattern with decorators frosting, then paint this inside.

      • 2 cups powdered sugar
      • 1 egg white
      • 1 tsp. clear flavoring
      • enough water to thin slightly (about 3 tsp.)

        Mix by hand.

        Note: You should always tint these recipes with a paste food coloring.
