It is widely accepted that fun activities for toddlers and children of all ages should include at
least one hour of physical activity per day, in order to maintain good health. A great way to do
so is by incorporating exercise with fun activities for toddlers and children of all ages. With the rise of the Internet, video
games and other technology-based entertainment, many children are not attaining the exercise
they require. Although poor diet is partly to blame, a lack of exercise has led to an alarming
increase in childhood obesity and related illnesses across the US. It is said that childhood obesity
is in the range of 16 to 33 percent, nationwide, with at least 30 states sitting at the higher end of
the spectrum.
It is thought that physical activity can help children to concentrate in school, and assist with
academic advancement. A poor diet and lack of exercise may cause a child to feel tired and
unmotivated, or even show signs of hyperactivity, due to energy not being used in a constructive
manner. Both of these factors can interfere with the learning and development of a child, leading
many to believe that regular exercise can contribute to academic success. It is also thought that a
child who leads a healthy and active lifestyle is more likely to lead a similar healthy lifestyle as
an adult.
It is never too late to begin living in a healthy and active way, and this is especially true for
children. However, it should not be left to a child to change the way they live on their own; a
child may not want to try new preschool activity ideas or healthy food options if they are the
only one in the household doing so. Therefore, it's important for parents to lead by example and
join in with lifestyle changes.
There are many ways parents can encourage children to exercise, but one of the most enjoyable,
for both adults and children alike, is music. Music can be incorporated into fun activities for
toddlers and children of all ages. It can make for fun exercise for just one child or a whole group,
which makes it great for both small and large families, as well as parties and play dates. It is
important to remember that safety is paramount, and the spaces outside and inside should be
appropriately designated for the intended activity.
Although the rise of technology-based entertainment has led to a decrease in physical activity for
children, many video game companies have developed music-based games to encourage
movement while playing. These games can be fun for the whole family, and include, but are not
limited to dance, active musical creation and singing.
If a child shows an interest in performing arts, which many do, this is a great opportunity to
encourage exercise. Singing, dancing , fun dress up games and acting all require some movement
and discourage sitting for prolonged periods. A great idea for routine activity in this area is for
parents to ask children for a weekly performance of a practiced piece. This then encourages
children to rehearse throughout the week.
Musical Chairs is a game that has stood the test of time. It is one of the fun activities for toddlers
and children of all ages that has been played for many years. It is a game that can be played
inside or outside and with many people at one time, which is why it is a firm favorite for parties.
This is another activity that incorporates music and encourages movement without feeling like a
chore for the children. Another similar party game is Musical Statues, which may involve even
more movement than Musical Chairs, as children tend to enjoy dancing or running to the music.
Dance classes, or at-home dance DVDs are another fun way for children to exercise to music.
Dance can improve balance and strength, which can also improve overall health. Dance is
becoming increasingly popular as a focus for exercise in both children and adults, due to the
aerobic benefits and fun-factor.
Not only is it important to lead by example, but also to praise children for their effort and
accomplishments in exercise so that these are self esteem building activities as well.
Congratulating a child on a job well done can go a long way to encouraging continued physical
activity.
So, let's all get healthy. Create fun activities for toddlers and the entire family. When it's fun, they won't even realize they are getting exercise!
