Anybody Can Build A Milk Carton Boat!

...they can range from very Simple... to Extravagant!

now you know . . . . one out of 20 people have an extra rib!

milk carton boat Gather your family and friends and build a milk carton boat. It is so simple. I don't think you can do it wrong. Well, maybe. Our Proud Mary milk carton boat didn't work exactly like we wanted it to, but it did stay afloat. Surprisingly, with all the weight of the lumber that we had into it, and carpeting (that got saturated), I really wondered if it would float. Then it had to hold two passengers! Surprisingly it did!

Proud Mary was built with the intentions of walking on water. Our thought was that we would build a wheel. Well, it turned out that our milk carton boat ended up just a little bit too tippy. We never rolled it over, but we couldn't stand up in it. So instead, we crawled, and it worked out just fine.

milk carton boat When gathering up your materials to build a milk carton boat, you will have to have a design in your head, or on paper. Use your imagination here and go a little wild. It doesn't have to be complicated, though.

You need to begin with a frame. The skeleton of the boat. This frame is going to be what you attach the milk cartons to. Bare minimum you will need a couple 2 x 4's. That is if you just want to build a couple pontoons to float around on. I've never used this, but PVC pipe with the ends capped off would work too.

You will need a few nails to hold your frame togeher. We'd hate for it to fall apart when you are out in the middle of the lake. Just saying! I have no pattern for you because everytime we did this, it was on a whim, and we just did it without plans.

milk carton boat Got your frame done? O.k. Gather all your milk cartons. You will need 1/2 gallon paper milk cartons or 1/2 gallon, or one gallon plastic milk jugs. They both work. A little note here. The wax coated paper cartons will not last very long. They eventually soak up water. Make sure the plastic jugs are capped (screw on is better) or if you are using paper cartons, make sure the open end is taped off with packing tape or preferrably duck tape. In these pictures, clear packing tape was used. I believe an empty gallon jug in the water will hold approximately 30 pounds.

All you do now is start taping the milk cartons on one by one using clear packing tape or duck tape. Make sure you are taping them around the 2 x 4's (frame)securely.

This is one of our family fun activities that is great for team building.

Host a milk carton boat race. What an awesome idea for family reunions, fourth of july, cub scouts, or just any ole time.

This Is Great Fun!
