Soudan Underground Mine
.....takes you a half mile beneath the surface of the earth
The Soudan Underground Mine is an experience that you
cannot get anywhere else in the United States. Truly
unbelievable.
Take yourself back in time to 1882, when this mine first
opened. You can't help but envision what it must have
been like to work a half mile underground, wearing
hardhats that sported a head-light. They didn't have the
modern machinery that the mines use today, so shovels
and picks were the tools of the trade.
You will ride a cage down a half mile into the earth to
the last and deepest level that had been mined before
it closed in 1962. Believe me, it is an eery feeling.
Here you will learn and observe fascinating facts about
this industry, the way it used to be. The men that worked
in this mine, and others, back in the day were extremely
hard workers. The long days and exhausting work that was
just a way of life is nearly unheard of today.
Wear a jacket and comfortable shoes. The temperature
remains a steady 50 dedgrees down there.
Another highlight at the Soudan Underground Mine is the
underground physics lab. Here you will find physicists
and engineers from all over the world doing experiments
trying to answer questions on how the universe works.
Young and old alike will appreciate these tours. It will
be an experience of a lifetime. Not the same ole, same ole
type of tours you have a tendancy to expect.
Me, I took a Cub Scout group here as a learning experience.
I don't think they realized they were learning something
because they were in such awe about where they were and
what they were seeing.
I do hope you get a chance to visit the Iron Range. Their
is just so much for you to see and do here, not to mention
I am repeatably told how friendly the people are up here.
And that's no lie!
